On April 1st and 2nd, the Valencian Community became the epicenter of the European debate on seismic and energy retrofitting in the building sector, on the occasion of the study visit by the Erasmus+ SHAKE-UP consortium (Seismic and Energy Retrofit Training for Building Resilience). This meeting served to strengthen transnational collaboration between training centers, technical institutes, and universities from Turkey, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
The visit began on April 1st in Alicante, with a key stop at the Seismic Registration Unit of the University of Alicante, where Prof. Salvador Ivorra conducted a demonstration on structural reinforcements in rammed earth walls. The group then continued to Benidorm, where Prof. Iván Cabrera (UPV) led a technical tour focused on the urban adaptation of this vertical city to seismic risk.
The second day, April 2nd, took place entirely in Valencia. In the morning, the consortium visited the urban innovation hub Las Naves, where EMAC Grupo presented its Building Eye system — an innovative solution for real-time structural monitoring, particularly valuable in seismic-prone areas. The delegation then moved on to the ICITECH Institute at the Universitat Politècnica de València, where two applied demonstrations were held: the Building Resilient project (by José M. Adam) and Sisbrick (by Luis and Francisco Javier Pallarés).
The event concluded with a consortium meeting at the Valencian Institute of Building (IVE), located on the UPV campus. The working session covered key project milestones, ongoing activities, identified barriers, and next steps, including communication strategies, dissemination actions, and financial aspects.
The SHAKE-UP project aims to train building sector professionals in seismic retrofitting and energy efficiency, by developing a European training pathway that addresses the current challenges of the built environment in risk-prone areas. The involvement of IVE and other key partners during this visit has helped to consolidate a knowledge network and highlight innovative initiatives developed in the Valencian Community.
